Update 12/24

Happy holidays, everyone.

I apologize for my lack of involvement with this blog over the last several weeks. Several obligations got in the way of making this record, but I’m pleased to tell you all that recording will resume January 2. Despite the two-month pause, everything is still surprisingly on schedule.

I’ve begun work on a stand-alone single that I will release for free in the spring. Velveteen is still scheduled for a fall 2012 release.

I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays.

Update 9/14/11

After nearly four days of being sick, I finally manged to beat the bug today. I did that recording thing I do and finished vocals for two more songs. There were good vibes in the old recording closet and I’d like to think I made the most of them.

The record is getting close to being a playground for me. There are only a few more steps to go before I head to Austin to track some sweet, sweet drumming. Nick Dillon, the gentlemen presiding over the drums for this record, is overwhelmingly talented and one of my best buds in this grand universe.

In other exciting news, an old friend is collaborating with me on this record. Lee Stout, a name that any Jump Up Jamie/Guillotones fans will be familiar with, is coming to town this weekend to lace some songs with his talent. Lee and I haven’t worked together since 2008, so I’m very anxious to see the gears turn.

More will be posted soon.

Update 9/11/11

Hello again.

I’m not usually one to do things of this sort, but I feel as though I should offer my thoughts concerning this national day of mourning.

I would ask that each of us become able to acknowledge that the tragedy of 9/11 was not simply one of the United States’ concern. Instead, I hope we increasingly view this day as being one that does not require American citizenship to lament, but rather a unifying recognition of a human tragedy that transcends matters of country, religion and race. The lives that were lost on this day should of course be mourned, but let us not so easily forget the damaging sociological effects on not only our nation, but the world. Just as you mourn the lives that were lost, also mourn the seemingly irreparable damage inflicted upon racial and religious stereotypes. Mourn the creation and hatred of a cultural “other” in a world in which “other” often means “enemy”. Mourn xenophobia. Mourn war, mourn the effects of it and mourn that we are not always able to see the causes of it. Mourn that there are sometimes those who see the causes, but do nothing.

There is much to be mourned on this day, and I simply encourage you to mourn all of it.

For some odd reason, I’m currently seated inside of a snow cone stand in Whitehouse, Tx. Weird. I think this blog is becoming less about my music and more about my day-to-day activities. I’ll do music stuff next time

Today, I wandered into a tiny restaurant that boasted a tasty falafel. Everything about this place reminds me of being in Austin. I’ll be sure to return here if I ever need a familiar feeling.

These audio tracks make up some important pieces of the first three songs on Velveteen. Was that a run-on sentence? Geez.

I’ve been swimming quite a bit lately. It clears my mind when the recording process clouds my head, as it often does. The water is always so nice here.
